Competing in the 2023 National Finals Soon
F1 in schools is a STEM competition (for ages 9-19) where teams compete to have the fastest car, the best portfolio and presentations and best branding. You can visit their website here. The car must have distinct Formula 1 like features, such as the front and rear wings, side pods and an aerodynamic model. We also must create a portfolio and presentation to show the judges what we learnt in the process and how we could improve the design further and a pit display to show our work to other teams. To find out more about the competition, click here.
Rian is the Team Manager, working on the portfolios and Enterprise of the team. He also works on making and developing videos for our Youtube Channel,
Nathan is the Graphic Designer, working on our brand and the graphics for the team. He also helps Rian with the portfolios and marketing of the team.
Kai is a Design Engineer, and gathers ideas for all elements of our cars from all kinds of sources, replicating and drawing inspiration from certain features.
Isaac is the Manufacturing Engineer. He manufactures and assembles our cars, as well as contacting our sponsors. He also builds and designs our domain.
Noah is the CAD Engineer, building the car and wind tunnel in CAD. He also helps with designing and manufacturing of the car, as well as documenting this in the portfolio.
Seb is a Design Engineer and is experienced in designing aerodynamic cars. He develops and refines our car designs to make them as fast as possible.
Team Marl1n is a London based team. We have come together to create a team designed to win, who we believe can produce sophisticated designs for our car, along with our marketing and producing our portfolios and our verbal presentation.
Here at Team Marl1n we believe that F1 in Schools is an amazing opportunity, where our team can put our minds together to produce results, which will be judged, and therefore will be able to improve upon for the future. It helps us develop life-long skill sets in teamwork, deadlines and working with sponsors in the industry. Most importantly, it helps us strive to achieve results, which we have worked for. To find out more about what why we take part in F1 in Schools, check out our blog entries 9, 10 and 12.
Isaac is our only member who has joined from Thrust Engineering, a team which won the Regional finals, with their Excellent portfolio and presentation. They started working in the autumn of 2019 before entering the entry class Regionals in the January of the following year. Thrust Engineering also regularly used the CFD testing facilities in Solidworks to help them prove their design concepts and improve upon them.
Team Peregrine's former members who have joined our team were Seb, Rian, Dan and Kai. Like Thrust Engineering, they started working in the autumn of 2019. They researched scientific ideas, which they tested using CFD software, and used in the design of their car. Team Peregrine had the fastest car including reaction time, and won the Judges' Choice Award.

Dan, Isaac, Kai, Rian and Seb joined up to form Marl1n in March 2020. Saul, who was new to F1 in School, joined as well and was gladly welcomed into the team to work on the branding and marketing of the team. We felt that this team was strong because we were all working on what we loved! This motivated us and allowed us to create amazing designs and portfolios.
After over a year of designing, refining, manufacturing, and writing we competed in the Dev Class Regional Finals in 2021. We had amazing portfolios and a really fast car, that really impressed the judges. We got the fastest car award, as well as the regional first place award. We were really happy with results and started preparing for the national finals.
Straight after the regionals, we started to work on our national finals project elements. Two months on, we had redesigned our car and remade our portfolios. We managed to impress the judges so much that we got the second place dev class award, meaning we were the second best in the whole of the UK! We also got the prestigious Research and Development award due to our amazing Design and Engineering portfolio, which meant we got a trip to Alpine F1 in Oxford! And as well as that we were in the top three for the pit display and best engineered car awards! We were so excited and amazed at how well we had done.

We are now really excited to start our journey into the pro class. We are really sad that two of our members: Saul and Dan had to leave and hope they have had an amazing experience. We also welcomed two new members to the team in June 2022: Nathan and Noah from Wyvern, the Entry Class 2021 Regional Champions. They bring great skills to the team and we hope to get even further in the competition with them.
We placed 3rd in the 2023 North London Regional Finals, and progressed to the National Finals. We also won the Pit Display award. We are now busy preparing for the National Finals!
Keep an eye on our blog to see our progress.
We come up with new and fresh ideas, and believe that creativity is key to innovation, whether it be in aerodynamics, marketing or graphic design.
We respect one another, and all the effort each one of us puts into the team. We aim to respect other teams and treat everyone we encounter like we would like to be treated.
As a team, we try to grow, and improve in everything we do. We are in Professional Class now, and are building upon our experiences from Development and Entry Class.
We try to use sustainable methods of working, whether it be by working less on paper and more on the computer, or taking public transport to our live team meetings.
We are also trying to offset our carbon footprint, by planting trees! You can help us with this effort, by going to trees.teammarl.in, to plant trees!
We are called Team Marl1n, named after the marlin fish, which is one of the fastest in the world. Their sword is extremely aerodynamic and helps them achieve incredible speeds. Team Peregrine (a former Entry Class team) took inspiration for their branding from the bird. Branding a team based or inspired by an animal gives a really powerful message. Seb came up with the name, and we have used it proudly since then. The 1 in Team Marl1n is there for a few reasons. The first, and most simple, is that it looks futuristic and cool, giving a nice touch to our name. It also helps us to be distinguishable and easy to recognise.
Our logo has the marlin fish jumping out with three sweeps of water splashing. The number three is special, and satisfies the human brain. That's why it is used in advertising and slogans so much. There are three stripes, each getting darker. The gradient give a sense of movement, important for F1 in Schools. Our branding is based around the colour teal, which is not only different, setting us apart, but a colour which gives sensations of calmness and trust.
